Siemens uses e-Translation Server from Linguatec as translation aid worldwide

In a globally operating organization such as Siemens with over 450,000 people in more than 190 countries, communication in English is becoming more and more important. Employees must not only be able to understand English websites, information sheets and messages but also write letters, e-mails or contracts in English themselves. Siemens has chosen the e-Translation Server from Linguatec, the language technology specialist based in Munich/Germany, as an efficient and secure tool for enterprise-wide handling of day-to-day translation tasks.

Already before the e-Translation Server was introduced, Siemens employees had regularly been using electronic dictionaries and online translation services. But as this was uncoordinated, not only were a number of different programs used but unprotected data was sent to and from these online services. This resulted in non-uniform translation results, increasing maintenance overhead and a significant security problem.

With the use of e-Translation Server in the Siemens intranet, these problems have become a thing of the past. Jose-Luis Ortega Lleras, project manager for “automatic translation” at Siemens Language Services, describes the new situation as follows:

“By using our own translation portal we ensure that the individual departments no longer use different translation tools, which all in all caused high procurement and support costs. We can also achieve a better quality, as the terminology can be managed centrally by Language Services.”

The e-Translation Server has been in use for 4 months now and employees can access the translation service in the intranet via a browser from anywhere in the enterprise and regardless of the platform. Jose-Luis Ortega is pleased: “The system is really easy to use and the translation quality of the e-Translation Server has exceeded all our expectations.”

As well as the reasonable acquisition and maintenance costs and the high program stability, employee acceptance is of course crucial for the success of the new translation solution. “From the ample positive feedback we can see that the e-Translation Server is very well received”, Ortega describes his experience so far. Another proof of the high acceptance is the high access rates. Still new, the tool already counts more than 50,000 accesses per month.
